On August 14, this F4U-1 Corsair "Spirit of 76" from VMF-215 flown by Major Robert G. Owens, USMC was one of the first planes to arrive at the newly captured airfield at Munda, New Georgia in the Solomon Islands where they began operations to cover the landings on Vella Lavella.
